While I was initially able to readapt my 16mm Cartoon Carnival series into a livestream event for some time last year, and still offer Video On Demand recordings of some of those streams, the online Carnival ultimately proved unsustainable for me as the pandemic wore on. For now, anyway. I go into more detail about that experience and some related struggles in a link further down in this post, and those of you who enjoyed the streams or later recordings of them should still hold out hope for more to come, when I’m able to provide. On a lighter note, however, it’s time to enjoy the ‘reel deal’ again!

We’ll be posting some of the progress on the Comi-Colors set next week. As Flip the Frog and Aesop’s Fables Volume 1 get finished, more time is going into getting the Comi-Colors scanned – most from the black and white separation negs. Now that things are opening up a little more, getting this material scanned is getting easier, happily.

Bedelia (1/3/30) – A character goes in his car to visit his girlfriend, but finds her asleep. The date doesn’t go as planned, and he winds up with a flower pot on his head. Underscore inclides “Do I Know What I’m Doing?” (recorded by Ethel Waters for Columbia); “Please Let Me Sleep” (an oldie from 1902, used quite frequently in cartoons, such as in the stork sequence from Mickey Mouse’s “Clock Cleaners” – no recording seems to turn up except a modern-day web performance by “Sheet Music Singer”); “Oh, How I Hate To Get Up In the Morning”; “Comin’ Thru the Rye”; “Old Black Joe”; and “What Wouldn’t I Do For That Man” (performed by the Charleston Chasers with Benny Goodman on Columbia, and as a vocal record by Helen Morgan on Victor – a torch singer familiar in parody to anyone who’s seen the ending of Warner’s “The Coo Coo Nut Grove”). “Bedelia” was from 1903, recorded by Billy Murray for Edison cylinder, the Haydn Quartet for Victor, and Arthur Collins for Monarch. Sousa’s Band would record a sort of “theme and variation” spoof in multiple tempos as “A Musical Joke on Bedelia” for Victor. Jan Garber recorded it on Okeh in the early 1940’s. James Moody later dredged it up for Blue Note as a sax instrumental. The song’s lyric also makes a reference to singer/composer Chauncy Olcott, who recorded a number of Irish standards during 1913-1920, and was the composer of “My Wild Irish Rose.” backpack

“Actually, we are kicking the tires on a follow-up to Scoob!” Cervone revealed to Comic Book Movie. “It hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s something we’re all excited about. The whole creative team that made the first movie is still around and back and working on something new. It was neat to create this Hanna-Barbera Cinematic Universe, and it’s exciting to return to it.”

As for Robin Robin, it will fly in November 27 on Netflix, just in time for Black Friday.

In today’s world, anime and manga are much more respected overall than they were 20 years ago. Back then, only certain animes like Dragon Ball and Pokemon had worldwide recognition and fame. But now, all sorts of series past and present have a larger spot in the history of fan love. One of the best examples of this is Fullmetal Alchemist. Which was made all the way back in 2001 and had two different anime adaptations (one based on the manga and one…not so much). Now, its creator, Hiromu Arakawa, is teasing a new series by her!
